This was one of the most important architectural journals of the day. There were many attempts to publish a magazine specifically for the architectural profession before AABN, but all were short-lived. The AABN was continually published until 1938 when it was absorbed by the Architectural Record. (See the article by Woods in the Reference Works section of this bibliography for more information on this and other early architectural journals)
AABN started as an 8 page weekly with 6 or so additional pages of unnumbered illustrations. It gradually grew to include an extensive classified ad section as well as advertising supplements. The illustrations were always an important part of the table of contents as well as news, articles and obituaries. Much of the text was contributed by architects. “The Illustrations” section of an issue occasionally included descriptions of the buildings but the norm was a one-line listing with the architect's name. The first building illustrated in the AABN was the Stick Style T.G. Appleton House in Newport by Richard Morris Hunt.
AABN Images
I have selected as many images as possible from the AABN that reflect the Stick Style, beginning with its first issue in 1876 through the last issue of 1890. AABN started as the Stick and other gothic related styles were waning. While the gothic dominated the illustrations in the first years of the publication, other styles quickly became prominent. For the most part, architects appeared to move from one style to another with ease. After 1880, houses with Stick Style influences were very rare. The last images selected appeared September 14, 1889 . They were competition drawings by Edwin S. Gordon and W.H. Orchard for the Rochester Architectural Sketch Club.
