William J. Clark House

Architect:
Austin, Henry (1804-1891)

Date:
1879-1880

Notes:
This house was built as a summer home on an elevated site with spectacular views of Long Island Sound. See also the Jacob Cram/Sturtevant House in Middletown, RI. The orientation of these two houses to the sea is remarkably similar. Henry Austin was a successful New Haven architect with a national reputation. He designed in many of the revival styles of the day and was mentor to many other architects. One of his most famous buildings is the Morse-Libby Mansion in Portland, Maine. The Clark House was one of his last commissions.
