Plain in relationship to its surroundings, this Back Bay home features an elegant set of Eastlake Style entry doors. The vertical boards in the door panels, the chamfered casings and the transom window are all features of Eastlake detailing in its purest form. The interior of this home was highly publicized in its day has the height of fashion in its aesthetic movement decor. Sturgis was born in Macao (spoke fluent Portuguese), grew up and was educated in Boston but spent much time in England. He was well acquainted with his British colleagues and many of the firms designs reflect this influence. After the partnership (1866-1886), Brigham continued to enjoy a very successful career. He is especially well-known in this area for his designs in Fairhaven commissioned by Henry Huddleston Rogers. The Millicent Library, Town Hall, Unitarian Church, High School and others were designed by Charles Brigham. He also designed the New Bedford Institution for Savings Bank (now Sovereign Bank) on Union Street in New Bedford.
