INDEXES AND ABSTRACTS FOR RESEARCH

Although not an index, a good source to consult as you begin to do research is the yearbook series Annual Review of Psychology. (1950 - -)
General Collection. BF30 .A56
This series critically reviews the current research on major topics in psychology. Articles have extensive bibliographies on the significant literature of a given subject. You may electronically access volumes from 1996 through Voyager. And you can browse the Tables of Contents of volumes from 1984 to the present at the Web site for Annual Reviews.
http://psych.AnnualReviews.org/contents-by-date.0.shtml

The primary periodical index for finding journal articles, conference papers, or dissertations within the literature of psychology is PsycINFO, which students may access through UMD's Find Articles & Databases Web page. Its print counterpart is Psychological Abstracts (Index Reference Collection.  BF1 .P65). Volumes from 1927 to 1996 are located in the Reference Department.

Because of the interdisciplinary nature of some psychology research, students may find it useful to consult electronic indexes from other academic subject areas for topics that range across disciplines. Related online indexes are:

  • Social Sciences Index (Community Health; Gender, Minority, or Family Studies)
  • ERIC (Education)
  • PUBMED (Psychiatry and Psychophysiology) - You may need to use MESH or Medical Subject Headings when searching this database. Consult a Reference Librarian if you need assistance.

In addition to the electronic indexes, the Reference Department has some subject-specific print indexes for locating periodical materials for psychology-related research.

Child Development Abstracts and Bibliography (1960--2001.)
