Welcome

As a UMD student, you are entitled to the full range of library services. Here’s how you can:

Visit in person

The University Library is located on the main campus, at the end of parking lot 13. Your UMass Pass is all you need in order to become a fully privileged student borrower. Be sure to bring the pass with you when you visit.

Visit online at www.lib.umassd.edu

Voyager is the library’s online catalog. Use this to search for books, videotapes, CDs or talking books. If you search for a specific item in Voyager, but receive a Your search resulted in no hits! response, click on the Virtual Catalog link to pursue your search in the collections of other libraries in the region. The Virtual Catalog works only for books.

To check to see if the library subscribes or provides access to a journal or magazine you want try the UMD Journal Locator.

Use the E-Resources databases finding articles, data and general information in magazines, periodicals and business resources. These are arranged in three ways:

1. If you know the title of the database you want to search, use the alphabet at the top of the screen.

2. If you know the subject, select it from the right-hand column.

3. If you are looking for information from general resources, click one of the selections in the left-hand column.

Subject guides introduce library resources that are either owned by the library in hard copy or are available as web links. This is a good place to begin your research.

If you cannot locate the journal article or book you need, interlibrary loan may be the solution. In order to request a book or article on interlibrary loan, use the online form, being particularly careful to complete the information accurately. Books and articles must be picked up at the library.

Contact a librarian

Ask a librarian for help with research strategies or finding appropriate research materials. Professional librarians staff the reference desk for almost all of the 80 plus hours that the library is open each week. You may:

1. Call the Reference Desk at 508-999-8678.

2. E-mail a reference librarian. A reference librarian will get back to you as quickly as possible but certainly within 48 hours. The questions on the form are those which are generally collected during the reference interview.

For assistance from a subject specialist librarian go to the liaisons page.

3. Click on Live Reference Online and "chat" with a librarian from one of the five UMass campuses about your search. This service is available weekday afternoons with additional hours as staffing permits.
