Gifts of Materials Information

The Claire T Carney Library accepts donations of materials that are appropriate to the Library’s role in meeting the academic mission of the university. Gift donations must be approved in advance. To make a donation request please contact:

  • Materials for the general collections: Stephanie Zabriskie
  • Rare books, photographs, manuscripts, organizational records, or other unique materials for Archives, Special Collections or The Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives: Judith Farrar

Gifts are evaluated on the basis of present academic need and physical condition. Items that meet these criteria are cataloged and added to the collection. Upon receipt, gifts become the property of the University. The Library reserves all rights to determine addition to the collection or disposal. Items not added to the collection may be given to other libraries, sold to raise money to purchase other items, or given away for free. As the recipient, the Library is an interested party and present federal tax regulations prohibit the Library from giving appraisals or estimations of value of donations.  Any desired appraisals must be completed before the gift is transferred to the University. Gifts of materials to the Claire T Carney Library are generally tax-deductible in compliance with IRS guidelines.  It is the responsibility of the donor to obtain valuations of their gifts. There are many resources on the web for out-of-print and rare books, appraisals and determining the value of your donation.

The Library does not accept the following for its general collection. Please check the Archives/Special Collections donation policy as their policy may differ:

  • Textbooks, unless they are currently used in courses at UMassD
  • Damaged books (including books with evidence of water damage, insect damage, mold, torn pages etc.)
  • Superseded or outdated editions
  • Computer and software manuals
  • Books with highlighting, underlining, or annotations
  • Self-published books
  • Single issues and back runs of journals and magazines
  • Most audiovisual materials

In order to make the donation process as efficient as possible, we require that those interested in donating materials to the library do the following:

Prepare and submit a list of all materials and include:

  • title
  • author
  • edition
  • ISBN number (if any)
  • year of publication

At the time of your donation, you may request that a bookplate be added to the donated items as an acknowledgment of your gift to the Claire T. Carney Library.
