Interlibrary Loan FAQ
What is Illiad?
Illiad is the interlibrary loan and document delivery system used by UMass Dartmouth. It helps our ILL staff process your requests quickly and efficiently. It also provides you with the ability to perform tasks such as viewing and canceling your requests.
Who may use interlibrary loan?
Interlibrary loan services are offered to current UMass Dartmouth students, faculty and staff.
How will I know when my material arrives?
You will receive an email in your UMass Dartmouth email account. If you request an item that can be delivered eletronically (e.g., an article), a link to the pdf file will appear in your ILLiad account under “PDF Requests Received.” Physical items will be held for you at the Circulation Desk.
How much does it cost to use interlibrary loan and document delivery?
The service is free to students, faculty and staff. If there is a cost associated with a particular item that the library can’t cover, our ILL staff will contact you.
How long does it take to receive an article request?
It generally takes approximately 3 to 5 working days. But the turnaround time depends on the availability of the article and on the sending library. This means that you could get an article within 24hrs or wait 2 weeks or longer. If you have questions about your request, please contact us.
How long does it take to receive a book request?
It takes approximately 2-4 business days to obtain an item from libraries in the Boston Library Consortium (BLC). Otherwise, average turnaround time is approximately 1 to 2 weeks but it can take considerably longer if the book is coming from far away (e.g., a book from Bridgewater State University will likely arrive much quicker than a book from the University of Southern California).
Are there things that I cannot borrow through the library’s interlibrary loan service?
Sorry, textbooks and other loanable material (DVDs, CDs, etc.) required for UMass Dartmouth classess that are available for sale at the campus store may not be requested through Interlibrary Loan.
Can the Inter-Library Loan materials be renewed?
Remember: Inter-library material are not semester loans, regardless of UMassD status, and are the property of another institution. If an extension of the loan is required, that decision is at the discretion of the lending library. Renewal requests must be submitted 1 week prior to the due date. Please request your renewals by sending an email to the ILL department. You will be notified if the renewal has been granted (along with a new due date) or denied, as soon as the lending library makes a decision. Borrowers are responsible for any late/replacement fees charged by the lending libraries.
